Ted Lewis was born Theodore Leopold Friedman on June 6, 1890 in Circleville. Famous for singing and showmanship, as well as his trademark top hat, Ted Lewis was one of the most successful and popular jazz entertainers of the early twentieth century. Before becoming famous, Ted grew up in Circleville where he first learned his musical craft both with the Cirvleville cadet band and local African American musicians such as Cricket Smith. Ted continued this trend throughout his career, often highlighting African American entertainers in his acts. Upon his death in 1971, Ted's wife Adah insisted that artifacts and memorabilia be returned to Circleville where they are currently on display in the Ted Lewis Museum. Visitors can view exhibits, the Ted Lewis archives, memorabilia and music library.
