Masonic Lodge to Theater
Once a Masonic Lodge, the Majestic Theater in Chillicothe has a long history as a destination for entertainment.
Once a Masonic Lodge, the Majestic Theater in Chillicothe has a long history as a destination for entertainment. Originally built in 1853 the two-story brick building contained a theater, dance hall, and lodge rooms upstairs. Entertainers and stock companies would stay for months putting on plays for the community. In 1876 the building was expanded to add more space and updates to the stage area, dressing rooms and ticket booth. Mr. E. B. Hough, a scenic artist from Syracuse, New York, was hired to decorate the interior by adding frescoes and other artistic elements to the walls and ceiling. The building became known as the Masonic Opera House with drama, comedy, minstrel shows, and operas being performed on a nightly basis. The early twentieth century brought more improvements to the building, and a movie screen and projector were added. Finally, in 1990 private investors bought and updated the theater with modern movie equipment. The Majestic Theater still shows movies today, making it one of the oldest continuously operating theaters in the country.
