A Park Near the City

Once home to Ohio’s prehistoric inhabitants, Virginia Kendall Park is named after the mother of Hayward Kendall, a prominent Cleveland industrialist who donated 430 acres of parkland to the Akron Metropolitan Park District in the late 1920s.

Once home to Ohio’s prehistoric inhabitants, Virginia Kendall Park is named after the mother of Hayward Kendall, a prominent Cleveland industrialist who donated 430 acres of parkland to the Akron Metropolitan Park District in the late 1920s. In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps created park amenities such as shelter houses and trails. These projects used local materials, including sandstone and chestnut timber, incorporating the natural landscape into their rustic architectural style. Today Virginia Kendall Park is part of Cuyahoga Valley National Park and offers several hiking trails to view impressive sandstone ledges and outcroppings, meadows, wooded areas and even a cemetery. Pamphlets for self-guided nature walks are also available at most trailheads.
