From Capitol to Courthouse

The Ross County Courthouse in Chillicothe served as the state’s first capital from 1803 to 1816. The building was constructed of stone and features large Corinthian columns that support a portico over the main entrance. Visitors cross over a mosaic of the Great Seal of Ohio as they enter into the building from the main entrance.

Built in 1858, the courthouse was designed by architect Edward Collins & Charles Autenrieth. Like many courthouses from that era it features a large clocktower. The building is still in use today and houses the Ross County Court of Common Pleas.
