The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum provides an intimate exhibit space in the heart of Columbus on the Ohio State University campus. In addition to the exhibitions, which rotate throughout the year, the museum operates as an active archive. In fact, the museum library boasts the largest collection in the world of materials related to cartoons and comics; including art, books, magazines, journals, comic books, archival materials, and newspaper comic strip pages and clippings. These collections range from original art and manuscripts of famous cartoonists such as Milton Caniff and Will Eisner, to the Jay Kennedy Collection of more than 9,500 underground comic books.
Visitors who wish to access materials from the library archive should select their desired materials before visiting by using the search tool located here, and make sure to email their selections to the librarian at cartoons@osu.edu. Items from the collections are available only on site.
Because the exhibitions change throughout the year, visitors will want to make sure to check the museum’s webpage before attending.
