Once known as Howe Mansion by travelers on the nearby Ohio and Erie Canal, this impressive Federal style home was the residence of prominent engineer Richard Howe. Howe supervised construction of the section of the Ohio and Erie Canal between Cleveland and Massillon. The house exemplifies the high style of Federal architecture including stone lintels, door surrounds, and window fenestration. Howe's work on the canal was also impressive; he designed the canal prism and locks between Massillon and Cleveland, including the fifteen-step lift locks visible at the Cascade Locks Park. Built in 1836, the Richard Howe House was restored and moved to its current location next to the Ohio & Erie Canal and Towpath Trail in 2008. Today, the house serves as a visitor information center for the Ohio & Erie National Heritage Canalway.
