Groveport – Sharp’s Landing

This brick building was constructed in the mid-1830’s and was originally located along the canal in a settlement about one mile south of Groveport known as “Sharp’s Landing.” In 2015, Groveport Heritage and Preservation Society saved the building and reconstructed it on this site, which is along the former canal right-of-way in Groveport. There is a historical marker in front of the building.

This preserved historic building dates from the mid-1830s when it served as a stop on the Ohio & Erie Canal at Sharp’s Landing, which was located about one mile south of Groveport. At that time, it was the place that canal boats exchanged their tow horses instead of carrying them on the boat. It later served multiple purposes including an icehouse on the east end, a smokehouse in the center, and a bakery on the west end.

In 2015 the Groveport Heritage and Preservation Society saved and relocated the building to highlight the importance of the Ohio & Erie Canal in Groveport’s History. It is staged to portray its multiple historic uses. An audio tour is also available.
