Spring House Gazebo in Eden Park
Located in Cincinnati, Eden Park features several of the most popular destinations in the city, including the Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park and the Krohn Conservatory. Other features include Mirror Lake, the Bettman Fountain, Tom Jones Commons, and the 172-foot-high Water Tower which was built in 1894. However, one attraction stands out for it’s more sordid past. The Spring House Gazebo was completed in 1904, making it one of the oldest public buildings in the Cincinnati park system, and was the site of one of the city’s most infamous murders.

In 1925, one of Cincinnati’s best-known attorneys named George Remus was sentenced to two years in federal prison for bootlegging. To make matters worse, his wife Imogene began having an affair with an undercover prohibition agent during his time in prison and the two began selling off Remus’ property and possibly even planning his murder. Upon his release in 1927, Remus ran his wife’s car off the road near the gazebo and fatally shot her in the stomach. Incredibly, Remus was acquitted in one of the first successful uses of the temporary insanity defense. Many visitors to the park claim that Imogene’s ghost haunts the gazebo to this day, and the site remains a popular spot for ghost hunters.
