Patchwork Jewels of Monroe County: Loop One
Monroe County rises from the banks of the Ohio River and spreads across the Appalachian foothills of eastern Ohio. Settled in the early nineteenth century, its history of agriculture, mining, and commerce is revealed in thriving towns dotting the rural landscape. Celebrating its bicentennial in 2015, Monroe County treasures that history, using barns and other buildings as canvases on which residents have recorded their heritage. Drive through Monroe County with host Karen Schaefer as she explore the history of barns and quilting. Loop I travels north and west of Woodsfield. Along the way, you’ll learn how a community art project continues to inspire residents and travelers alike.
The second quilt barn trail created in Ohio, the Monroe County trail encompasses some unique stories, such as the advent of using barns for advertising and the young artist who learned his trade from the last Mail Pouch barn painter in the state. Please remember that quilt barns are located on private property and should be viewed from public roads. Don’t forget to exercise caution if you stop to take pictures of the barns. This tour was made possible by a grant from the Ohio Arts Council.
